Ben Hyde:

I learned this rule from “Reading the Forested Landscape,” if you stand in the forest and all the trees are about the same size it tells you when the catastrophe happened. That works just as well for housing developments. If you take the rule seriously then one of your first questions is always: what were the catastrophes?

What were the catastrophe's is such a smart question. Victor Papanek 40 years ago challenged the design world with his book "Design
for the Real World." What made me think of it was the thought from reading Hyde that the catastrophe was somehow we lost our minds.

I'm astonished for example by so much vitriol directed at Umair Haque over his HBS posts. That creating something good is viewed with such suspicion to be madness!
